Seems a fun experiment has become my most requested tune!
It’s a NEW GENRE OF RAP I call ‘Ransom’ because it’s like making ransom notes out of samples. Fun!
Please share this page as much as possible, this tune’s special
I’ll be opening sets on The Church Of Bass Tour with this jam…
How to Make Ransom Raps – ill.GATES
1. Make an instrumental
2. Write your own lyrics
3. Record yourself performing them
4. Source ALL of your lyrics from samples (many words will have to be cut out of others, eg. ‘oscillator’ and ‘modulator’)
5. Meticulously edit/pitch correct them (usually one syllable at a time)
6. Mix it so that it sounds coherent (harder than you would think!)
7. Headbang!
In other news my most beastly of Dubstep tunes came out yesterday. It’s a 10 producer collab remix for Dieselboy’s Sub.Human label. Have a listen:

@ill_e_gal
bad ass name… love it
This is seriously my new theme song. Did you get any inspiration from the “Real Mitt Romney” song? LOL
love the breaking bad intro illiam.
Good track and BIG UPS! But It’s not 100 percent new. D.Veloped has been at it for years. It’s called Microsampling. http://soundcloud.com/dveloped/my-dangerously-melodic-anthem
I disagree. He didn’t write and perform his own lyrics. He started with the samples.
Here’s the difference:

Producers have been microsampling since the 80s. There are probably a 1,000 producers on Soundcloud that have examples of this work. But as Tao points out, the idea is not to work from the samples but work from an original lyric. Admittedly the lyrics that ill wrote are fairly derivative and so the results are easy to confuse, but I think there is something to this ransom style, it’s more coherent and fluid.
Thats not a new genre of rap, music. sampling acapellas, djs dot it all the time.
It’s a new subgenre of mashups actually…
Here’s why:
#RansomRap101:
Make Instro, Perform ur OWN Lyrics, Replace em ALL w Samples (1 syllable @a time), Mix/Glitch it, Release it…
2 questions: Why do you record yourself performing lyrics if you’re not using the recording in the song? And, how do you make words out of other words (eg. ‘oscillator’ and ‘modulator’)?
“boss of this town” -> “oss o”
“see you later” -> “later”
“oss o” + “later” = “oscillator”
As for recording yourself… nope, I see no reason.
I see why, to fit them all, I think It must be easier ;D
It’s easier to fit the cadence properly when you record your own vocal first, and you need to make damn sure you like the lyrics before you put all that time into sourcing samples.
And haliphax is right, when you can’t find a word or just want to be cheeky you cut single syllables out of other words to make do.
Good questions!
RAAAAAAAAD!
