    awesome!!

What if I dont have Ableton Suite….what will I lose out on?
You probably talk about it in the video, but I dont have speakers at work. Thanks in advance.

    • Daysha says:

Hi. The full Ableton Live Suite includes all the instruments that are required to use the template. Without it, you would be missing the key elements needed to load up the templates.

  3. TimN says:

Kinda bummed about needing Suite :(

  4. Mkane10 says:

thank you gates! see you at BM!

    • Mtk says:

I will be rocking your template out there with some custom stutter edit and a few of will marshalls effects!

      • illiam Gates says:

sick! yea i’m debating making a new version where the VU meters are all punch ins, but at the same time it’s nice to leave a bit of mental space for people…

maybe i’ll just make two versions or something?

  5. ill.Gates reinvents the wheel once again!

  6. Josef Korbel says:

I have the controller mapped with the new template but how do I get the actual live set up in the Ableton arrangement view?  This might be a stupid question…Do I just open up a live set and find the template??? Help, thanks

    • Daysha says:

Hi Josef. It takes some set up before-hand, but well worth the effort. First, save the template as the default so it opens up when you open Ableton. This is done by opening the template and going to optiond/preferences/file folder and “save current set as default.”

Next you want break all of your songs down into 4 parts (intro, drop, bridge, outro, etc) this is done by dragging a track to a turntable and coping it four times. Next click on one of the clips and adjust the loop settings to fit the part. Do this for the rest of the parts.  Next highlight all 4 parts and drag it to the browser. It will autosave a new project folder. You may need to rename it accordingly. Inside this folder will be the .als file that you drag to the turntable.

  7. Josef Korbel says:

also, what is the purpose of the supatrigga and how come I can’t seem to install in on my mac…also, how come the lights on the grid on my apc are not lighting up and have tracks loaded??

    • Daysha says:

The supatrigga is a retriggering effect that acts much like a DJ juggle. You need the audio units version for MAC… a free download from here: http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=6  Make sure your controller is set up correctly in the preferance. Can you email help@illgates.com if you are experiencing any other issues. I’m going to get someone that lives and breaths the APC40 to help you out.

      • illiam Gates says:

once you install it you have to turn on AU/VST support in the ableton preferences as well.

it’s under the file/folder preferences and you only need the system folders turned on. not the custom folders.

        • Zac Duvall says:

hey man, i bought this today, and everything works except the punch-ins on the Activator/Solo/RecordAim buttons below the 1st channel, Is this somehting to do with the Audio Plug in, because I cannot get it to work. I have it in the correct folder, and the AU/VST are both On.

  8. porter says:

hey man, suuper stoked on trying out the new template but i’m having some trouble setting it up. don’t really know what im doing wrong. I’ve got supa trigger installed fine. but I must be installing the remote midi scripts wrong because the apc40 only has like 1 light on in the matrix even if clips are loaded in ableton and there is no typical red box around the clips visible on the screen. its like it doesn’t sense the apc40 yet the little yellow box in the top right hand corner is still showing midi response.

Perhaps its because I’m running on a pc? vista 64bit service pack2.

its a little confusing.. do I take the folder called ill.Gates_APC40_AlwaysPureCarnage_Template_v1 and put that whole folder into the MIDI Remote Scripts? I can see where I select that in the midi sync tab of preferences – control surfaces drop down. I’ve got my midi ports set to input: track ON remote ON and output: track ON…

not really sure.. I’m running ableton 8.2.1.. could it be because I dont have suite? I notice my saving and exporting are disabled which is a little weird. is that just because I dont have cabinet?

sorry for all the questions, I’ve been so pumped on this thing and cant wait to try out the cool ass vu meters now, they look siiick!

thanks in advance ILL keep it up, see you at shambs..

  9. Andrew Harrison says:

I was curious if people who attended one of your workshops get the free upgrade as to the apc40, that would be awesome.

  10. Jeff Boychuk says:

Great question. I don’t have a trigger finger so i havent used the dj templates that were included in the workshop. I do have an APC40 though so I’m very interested in this one.

  11. Josephando says:

    Hey All,
Can someone please let me know what kind of stuff you are putting in the main track column vs the sample column? This template is kinda freakin awesome but I want to make sure I am using it to its fullest.

    Joe

    • illiam Gates says:

usually a mastered track in the main track column, and then maybe an acapella, or glitchy edits of the main track, or another track that it mixes well with… anything goes really. the idea is to make routines you can perform and then store them as one clip pack :D

  12. Wskirby says:

I havent even purchased the apc40 or template yet. But, can you set more cue points than just four?

    • illiam Gates says:

yea, as many as you want. 5 without scrolling. i find that’s the max for rolling on instinct tho… any more and you’ll have to think about everything you’re doing.

  13. Wskirby says:

I guess that goes with joes question in a sense. Different sounds are introduced throughout the verse, etc. Looking Forward to purchasing the set up. Just trying to get the vibe before i drop 350$$$

    Thanks, Will

  14. matt says:

Can I utilize this with Live Lite that came with the APC 40?

  15. Robin Wylie says:

was there an update email sent for the version that doesnt need suite? also anyone tried this with an apc20, i know there will be some missing knobs

  16. erist says:

Hmmm, seems to freeze Live everytime I try to use on of the punch-ins. Nothing to do but Force Quit. Live 8.2.1 on Lion. Any thought?

    • erist says:

reinstalled supatrigger and upgraded to live 8.2.2. Still no dice. Freezes up everytime, often without even using any effects.

      • Hi Eric. Sent you an email to your inbox with link to a fix. Suspect your CPU is maxing out due to high usage from the sidechaining. The fix is a version that reduces the load on your processor. Let us know it this fixes it for you. We’ll be releasing the update to all users later this week.

        • erist says:

Just wanted to confirm that this got sorted. We are not sure what problem was (was not CPU overload), but simply creating new MIDI tracks for the lights and copying over settings worked a charm. Performed out with it last night. 2 hour set, no hitches. Look forward to tearing it apart a bit and customizing it further over the next few weeks. Only thing that doesn’t seem to work with my APC version is the transform punch in. Also might be nice to have length of reverse also mapped to a knob so it can be adjusted on the fly, same as length of repeat.

  17. Jean says:

    Hi there

Just bought your dj suite one week ago. I have a launchpad and UC-33e, which should do the job to run the APC-40 template. However, tweeking the APC40 template in order to make it compatible for these 2 devices seems harder than i thought… Can anybody help?

    jean

    • Daysha says:

       Hey Jen,

Most people find it easier to start with the MPD24 template as base to map to alternatives. The APC40 template contains a lot of customizations that are specific to that device. Email help@illgates.com and i’ll see if i can’t connect you with someone that uses the template for these controllers.

  18. tripnotic says:

Just bought this template, but I noticed that the I/O is locked or something on ableton. I have been using the APC40 for about a year now, and I always use the 3/4 channel as a cue for the next track. I want to be able to hear the track that’s cued up in my headphones, but I can’t figure out how to do it with this template.

    • illiam Gates says:

bottom buttons of the VU meters = cue
top buttons of the VU meters = show active wave on that channel

      • Soren Muller says:

The cue buttons at the bottom of the VU meters only kill the output…can’t seem to figure out “cueing” with headphones.  I’ve got v1.1 of the template and 8.2.6 running on OSX Lion.  I’m using the smartmixer/internal mixer .als and have phones jacked straight into Audio DJ 8.  Thanks.

  19. illiam Gates says:

quite simple! just tag the bottom button of each VU meter to cue… the TOP button of each VU meter will show you the active waveform playing on that side :D

    • tripnotic says:

I’ll give that a try right now! I should mention that I don’t run anything through a mixer, and I use a M-Audio fast track pro soundcard that I plug my headphones into that I can cue tracks from.

    • tripnotic says:

Alright, so got that sorted (brilliant way to use the cue and check track progress by the way). now for a stupid question…I’ve been messing around with it for a while now learning the features, but for the life of me, I can’t find where you mapped the stop clip to. When I play a track and want it to end, I normally press the stop clip button. under this template, it’s been mapped to the dummy clip to trigger the fade delay. When I press the button right below the track that’s playing (on the same channel) nothing happens either to make the track stop. help a brutha out!

    • JT says:

Is the waveform view top button something in the latest version? I tried it and nothing seems to happen for me.

  20. germsi says:

    1. can’t get right channel to work
    2. best place on a pc in XP sp3 to put plug ins….for trigger finger)
    3. how to save as als files? i know how to beat stretch and prepare my tracks , just not how to save them asa group i can drag and drop… i understand the concept but ????? i’m missing something here is it a pc difference?

    • germsi says:

got right channel to work… still #2 &3

      • Hey Germsi

        2. Visit program files –> ableton –> Live8.x –> Resources and create a new folder for your plugins. If you have other audio software that utilize VST plugins, you can store it in their VST folder. Once you pick your folder, drag in the Supatrigga.DLL file.

Next, we need to tell Ableton where you store your plugins. Open it up and navigate to OPTIONS –> PREFERENCES –> FILE/FOLDER TAB. About 1/2 way down, turn “On” the Custom Plugin Folder option and click browse to locate the folder you are storing your plugin. (either the one you just created, or the one you are sharing with another application.)

        3. Simple! Just CTRL-CLICK on the parts and drag and drop them into a folder in the browser on the left. Then just rename the folder what you like.

      • djsanti says:

how’d you get the right channel to work?  I’m having the same problem, the left is fine, just can’t get the right side to sound normal, sounds like all the eq’s are very low and if i move around the knobs well  the left track gets affected.

        • Djsanti says:

so I restarted my mbp and now it’s working, i can hear both sides, the only problem now is that the lights go crazy randomly, I’m checking my midi port preferences and they are just like the video. any ideas?

          • illiam Gates says:

hey there santi. i’m guessing your problem is that you’ve turned the EQs past 12 o’clock. they ‘zero’ at 12 o’clock and then start turning the other side DOWN when you cross 12 o’clock. this is used to achieve dominance in the mix.

once you get the hang of that system it’s really great. trust me :D

          • VJ PLZ says:

I had the same problem as everyone else: the right channel wasn’t showing up. It turned out I had the wrong one loaded. You guys want the smart template, not the external mixer one. Worked perfectly, after I realized which one to use!

  21. turntablarasa says:

hey there, i watched this vid and would love to use this template. I´m on Live 7 and do not really wanna go up to 8. In the vid, i did not see a reason/effect/feature u use wich needs 8. Would this also work on 7?
    greets

  22. christapher says:

Yo, I’m having some difficulties with the effects and the supa trigga plug in. I’m on a mac, and have installed the plugin exactly as it was suggested in the info guide. But still, live isn’t recognizing it. This is messing with the effects (only some are usable(beat repeat fizzles out and loses volume after one bar)) and the right channel audio.

    •  Hey Christpher. Open up Ableton and navigate to Options — Preferences — File/Folder and click the browse button to select your custom VST folder preferences. Also make sure the feature is clicked on. Let me know if that doesnt solve the issue for you.

  23. Joey says:

hey ill! been messing around with the template quite a bit since getting it yesterday, and it’s awesome! do you have a pdf file of the template that your users can quick reference to? :)

  24. David H says:

Picked up the APC40 template but for some reason OS X can’t find the component despite dropping it in my personal ~/Library and the system library.  Any ideaS?

  25. Sprock3t says:

    Hello,
what is the Mastering suite for on both main tracks  in both the external and internal versions and is it supposed to be turned off? Would really appreciate any help you could give to help me understand this a bit more,

    Peace,

    • illiam Gates says:

That’s for when you’re playing a record that has older/bad mastering and you want it to stand up to newer material.

I use this when I’m dropping funk/soul/reggae jams that were ripped from vinyl. Make sure to turn it off when you’re done though!

      • WIZ says:

Just bought the APC 40 Template. What would be the best way to roll the sound out of this template? Complex or Complex Pro? I have an MBOX Mini 2

  26. erist says:

Didn’t get an email about the upgrade – can you make sure I am added to list so I can DL it and future upgrades? Thx!

Also, anyone else having trouble with the “transform” punch-in not working?

    •  Hey Eric. Not finding your email in the system. Did you use a different email to purchase? Or perhaps you can email your receipt to help(at)illgates.com. We’ll get you sorted right away.

  27. Sky Doherty says:

I’m waiting for a reply to the Phatconductor email address.
I didn’t get a code via email.I have the original template which I can’t use w/o a Trigger Finger.I can get pretty far w/ editing the Trigger Finger template, but the multi-message pads pose a little bit of a hurdle.  If I can see how the APC/MPC templates work, I’ll build for the Launchpad+Kenton KMX, which I use. From there, I’ll be giving the templates to you to distribute.
    Thanks.

    • Hey Sky. Not sure if i understand. Are you needing the latest update version? If so, shoot a copy of your receipt over to help(at)illgates.com and we’ll get you sorted with the latest update. If you are seeking to modify the existing to work with the launchpad, let us know.

  28. tripnotic says:

I’m having major CPU overload issues using this template now. I have a track chopped up into 3 parts on one channel and it’s already at 50%, when I try mixing in another track on another channel it maxes out at 100%! help!!

    • Hey Scott. Can you tell me what version of the template you are using? We just release V1.1 that fixes the CPU hogging that was caused by the sidechaining. If your not using this version, hit me up at help(at)illgates.com and i’ll get you the update.

  29. C-dubbz says:

Having some problem with the template.  The selection area bounces from where i am to the top alot so i have to keep scrolling back down to the tracks i was at do you know what would be causing this?

    • C-dubbz says:

oh and also.. Is v1 the one made for the suite and v1.1 for either or?

      • Hey C-Dubbz. V1.01 and greater no longer require the full Abelton Suite to operate. Not sure about the jump issue. Can you email Help(at)illgates.com so we can connect you for help.

        • illiam Gates says:

The jump issue is actually a small bug in the MIDI remote script. Will Marshall is in the process of fixing it, but he’s moving house right now so it will take a week or two.

The good news is that it only jumps when you CLIP (causing all those red lights to flash). If you stay out of the reds it won’t be a problem.

To make DAMN sure you don’t clip you can turn the utility DOWN on each of the clip channels. Turning it down to -24dB should do it.

  30. Jahsiah says:

Hey I just bought the APC template, for some reason the R Main will not play. When I tweak the sends it will play through them but I can’t seem to get volume out of it. It’s probably a quick fix but help would be greatly appreciated – Thanks

    • Jahsiah says:

The VU meter doesn’t work for the Right side either????

      • Hey Jahsiah, Make sure your EQs are all set to 12:00 position and the crossfader is in the middle. The volume fader defaults to the down position.

        • Jahsiah says:

Thanks for your response… The problem happened to be some glitch with Ableton and the midi Remote Scripts. I had followed the directions on install but for some reason the right channels weren’t working. After re-installing still nothing. I changed the control surface (in preferences) back to the original APC40 and then back to APC Gates Will Marshall and then it decided to start working. Just in case anyone else has this problem, this is how I fixed it.

  31. Sean Wilcox says:

Just bough this and I am having problems using the rewind and other supatrigga functions – I have placed the component in the correct place and it still ain’t working – please help me! my email is smwilcox@uvm.edu

  32. Dutchslice says:

can this be used with the apc40 only or is it meant to be used in combination with traktor? also does the “effect punch in” need bomes? midistroke? etc? even the iac bus method? or are these all wrapped into the template itself?

    • Dutchslice says:

after days of pulling my hair out trying to throw punch in effects to my own template i bit the bullet and purchased yours. wow. i really dig it! i did see in one of the older posts that you were considering adding more punch ins to the vu meters, pleeease do. i would love to be able to switch some of those out with different effects and not lose the effects you already have. also, is it possibly to map the shift button to switch knob settings so id be able to control said effects? such as turnado, effectrix, artillery2?

      • illiam Gates says:

I actually left the VU meters wide open except for the top (show waveform) and the bottom (cue) buttons. These, and the shift knob are available for end users to soup up the template and make it their  own.

The punch in system is actually quite easy to understand once you have the template open and in front of you. The trick it to look in the CLIP AUTOMATION on the dummy clips using the ‘show automated parameters only’ option (available through right click). If you make more dummy clips with the same launch and quantize settings, and then copy/paste my clip envelope onto the wet/dry for the new effect you want to punch-in you’ll be on your way in no time :D

        • Dutchslice says:

I wish i could “like” that reply a few billion times… i just assumed everything was “locked/in use” and hadnt given it a shot. this template is a monster!! akai should just give you whatever you want and package this with the apc… endless thanks (for the template and the notes on how to customize)!

    • illiam Gates says:

it’s meant to be used APC40 only, no need for traktor.

and for the punch ins i managed to figure out a way to do it without any additional software. woohoo!

TOP SECRET method tho, you’ll have to crack it open to see the magic, lol

  33. Storm Moszkowicz says:

Hey, having trouble getting any read from ableton, I have suppa trigger in Library->Audio->Plug-Ins->VST with my custom folder off in ableton

As for the template it is in Contents-> App-Resources -> MIDI remote scripts
And all I did for it was unzip the file open it up, grab the Ill Gates Marshall template and stick it in where you said, Ableton isnt reading the template and I have gone to pref. and selected it as my script :(

  34. gophers says:

i’m considering purchasing the template and i have a silly question…will this work with a PC and Ableton Live Lite (comes with the APC40).  thanks!

  35. Austin says:

Hey i just bought this template and im having trouble seeing the remote script in my list to choose from. I followed the directions by placing the entire folder into the remote scripts folder under show contents. I restarted ableton but yet i still cannot see the script in the remote scripts list

  36. Om1nous says:

Hi I juat bought the template for my APC, and it seems to be working, however when i use the punch ins I get a piano sound. Also, random piano sounds just randomly happen every once in awhile….any Ideas? Im using a PC with Windows 7 and have 8.2.2 on it.

    Thanks, Jamie

  37. Ty Kromm says:

ust downloaded the template, have the most recent version of ableton live 8, doesnt work when i try and connect it through the midi preferences, im able to select ACP GATES but doesnt connect. Also only shows 2 Midi Ports instead of 4 on your video

HELLP LOL i dont want to waste my 50

    • illiam Gates says:

we figured this out on the phone. he had put the ENTIRE template folder into the midi scripts folder.

      that’s not right.

what you want to do is go INSIDE the template folder and find the APC_GATES_WILL_MARSHALL folder and then put THAT folder into the MIDI remote scripts folder.

  38. Josephando says:

    Hey All,
Finally getting my head around the apc template, Mr Marshall, you are a baddass. The way the volume faders and cut offs work is genius. Is there any way to make the knobs more and less sensitive? Ideally I would like the effect selectors to be more sensitive and really really want the tempo controls to be way less touchy. Is there a script I can edit or some midi mapping tool?

If you are thinking of getting this template, do it!

    Keep it up,
    Joe

    • Anonymous says:

You can start out by adjusting the mix/max for various settings. Tempo for example. maybe you want the min and max to only be about 40 BPM apart. You could also assign the knob to “fine” tempo control rather than “coarse” tempo control

      http://www.akaipro.com/tipsjun09

For other stuff, you need to start using translators, which gets more complicated.

    • illiam Gates says:

      1. go into midi map mode and then you’ll see all of the mappings on the left.
      2. find the parameters you want to change and change them

  40. Hey i have the right version of ableton. put the marshall file into remote scripts. i can select it as my control surface but the inputs and outputs cant find it

  41. gophers says:

Just bought the template, I placed the APC40_GATES_WILL_MARSHALL folder in the midi remote scripts subfolder of Ableton, then went into ableton and adjusted the MIDI/sync preferences as instructed (adjusted the track and remote settings).  After doing this, however, the layout of session view is the same as the factory default.  How do I activate the template layout?  Thank you

  42. JT says:

Hey there been using the template for a while and have started to customize it. I am using the latest version with windows. I saw you mention in a post below that the shift key was left wide open so you could use the additional knob banks. When ever I hit the shift button I get nothing. It seems like its locked. Is this maybe something with just the pc version of the template?

    • illiam Gates says:

you will have to UN MIDI MAP the shift key in ableton first.

      1. go into midi map mode
      2. find an empty clip slot and click it
      3. hit the SHIFT key
      4. look over at the left where the midi mappings are… you should see the shift key and it’s two midi locationS highlighted.
      5. delete both of those mappings
      6. SHIFT functionality is yours!

The smart EQ’s are either confusing the hell outta me or something is bugging with the template.

    http://i.imgur.com/JujCR.png

I can’t understand the logic of how it works…I’ve tried placing all the markers at 12 o’clock but still its all random.

Both sides affect both right and left channels and I just don’t get it. Some clarification would be great!

    • illiam Gates says:

each knob is designed to have two functions.

1 – anything less than 12 o’clock turns that band down on that side
2 – anything more than 12 turns the OPPOSITE side’s band DOWN

think about it like set of spectral crossfaders.

if you are annoyed, then you can just remove that feature by UN-MIDI-Mapping the BOTTOM three knobs on each ‘smart mix’ rack (located on the orange output channels)

Hey this is an awesome template/script – I want to try to port this to the Ohm64 with internal mixing.  Is there anything about the remote script that I need to know?

I am not going to worry about the VU meters – I just won’t have them.  Are the VU meters somehow connected to anything in the template in such a way that it will be broken without the script.
My motivation for using this template instead of the MPD32 is that the MPD32 script doesn’t seem to have the Low, Medium, High, Gain EQs and the two extra sample tracks.  Would it be easier to try to recreate those feature in the MPD32 template than remap this one to the Ohm?

Thanks for all of your work on this!

    • illiam Gates says:

the midi remote script is only for the VU meters.

you should be able to port it to the OHM without too much issue just pay careful attention to the crossfader, the punch ins, and all of the rack macros.

  49. DaMonkey says:

Of course this is a great template, we’re talking about the Conductors’ work here (with the assistance of Will Marshall)
Wondering if there have been reports of VU meters losing functionality with 8.2.5.  Worked fine with 8.2.1.
Also noticed that the transform side chain was a massive cpu hog regardless of ableton version.
    Note/  I’m running v2.0 of template

  50. Domnasty says:

I downloaded the Supatrigga plugin and when i try to open the Supatrigga to install it. Its said “There is no application set to open the document “SupaTrigga.component”.” im on a mac and installed audio v version

    • illiam Gates says:

you don’t open the .component.. that is supatrigga itself.

      but that file into:

mac hd: library: audio: plugins: components

and then turn on AU support in the ableton prefs.

      • DaMonkey says:

ILL U R Sir, lLL you are

First off I must say this sick ass ninja template, and all it encompass, is a dream to work with.

Ok, so I must have been up playing late when I wrote my last post as I now realize I left out some crucial information.
        Here’s the run down >>>

“L Main” runs me around 15%, If I’m on the fader it
        maxes out around 21%

“R Main” runs me around 20%, if I’m on the fader it maxes out
        around 25%

If I delete the “TRANSFORM-APC-FILTZ3″ on the “L out” my cpu remains the same around 15%

Now, if I delete the “TRANSFORM-APC-FILTZ3″ on the “R out” my cpu drops from the high 20% down to around 18%, but, doesn’t drop all the way down to the 15% that the “L main” normally cruises at.

I also copied the “TRANSFORM-APC-FILTZ3″ from the “L out” replacing the “TRANSFORM-APC – FILTZ3″ on the “R out” and tested it again.  The result…no difference!

So… what to conclude?  Good question!  I imagine there is something off within the “R Main” or “R out” or perhaps there is something external to the R Channel that’s having a negative effect on it.

Also, maybe its just me, but, the gait doesn’t seem to be working?
Also wonder how to effectively use the reverse, its functional and usable but, it seems like
there’s something off, it always throws the levels up really high.

        Ok, that’s all I got……phew

      • Timothybone says:

AU is turned on in preferences. I can’t use the VST because I have an Intel Mac.
How do I get the template to recognize the AU?here’s the error when loading the dj template: VST: “SupaTrigga”: The VST plug-in could not be found.
        I’ll send a copy to help@IllGatesSupport:disqus

        • Timothybone says:

The AU is placed in the file location :
mac hd: library: audio: plugins: components

          • Timothybone says:

Solution found to issue when using AU instead of VST.
I loaded the Smart Mixer 2-1.0 template instead of the 2.0 template copy I also had, then I no longer recieved the VST issue as the template was able to load the AU of Supatrigga.

By the way I have a Macbook pro with Intel.

          • Timothybone says:

Ah, and also super stoked for the workshop you are teaching today! See you soon in Santa Cruz.

  51. Moflo6 says:

love the template! Is there any way to make 4 vu meters instead of 2? So each track has a vu meter?

  52. Chase-boss says:

this looks great ! but i only have the version of abelton that came with the apc40 does that matter?

    • illiam Gates says:

you’ll need a full version of ableton. not suite though, but a full version. the lite versions that ship with various pieces of gear are usually kind of annoying in the long run.

it might work though, i’ve never tried it. i doubt it, but you never know, right?

  53. Dutchslice says:

shot an email over to help@ill hoping for a quickish response… hard drive fried, only had v1 on my external, forwarded my receipt… thanks in advance!

  54. Troy says:

hey iLL, been loving the template but recently ran into problems when I updated to ableton v 8.2.6. I put the APC william gates file in the new MIDI remote scripts and the template works, but now only the beat repeat punch in works as a punch in, my clips dont register on the clip launch and the vu meters don’t work. Any suggestions?? I sent an email as well from tjhinwc@sbcglobal.net, any response to either one much welcomed!

  55. porterrrr says:

hey guys, just submitted an e-mail to help (at) illgates.com I cant get the cueing working properly. I understand the bottom button in the VU meters enables the cue (and I can see it works in ableton) however I don’t get any output to my headphones. I suspect this is because I am using an M-audio Fast Track pro to connect my speakers, headphones and external midi instruments. in this situation where should I plug in my headphones? I normally have them in the headphone port on the fast track pro, but it doesn’t work. Should I be plugging my headphones into the headphone port on my mac? Or perhaps the 3/4 out on the fast track somehow? Not sure how that would work? Please advise guys…also, this thing kicks ass! great work.. anyone else having problems with the Reverse function bringing up the levels quite a bit? it clips on me all the time!

thanks a ton keep up the great work!

  56. Ftghelix says:

This is great! I’m stoked to try it out! I purchased this the DJ template back in May. I own a APC 40 not a trigger finger. Been waiting for this release. How do I go about redeeming my older version so I can get the APC updated template?

  57. Rosen says:

Hey ill, I am running ableton suite version 8.2.1 and have placed the supatrigga.component in the proper folder as you stated below and ableton is still failing to load it when i load the template and my apc40 does nothing. Email me back asap at rosen@oswego.edu. Thanks

  58. Augie Sanchez says:

Hey Dylan.  I had just sent an email regarding getting the template.  I saw the email late, on christmas day!  Any chance I can get a copy?  I can say that I did attend your workshop a couple years ago at Shine but never got the templates/support material.  Still learned a ton.   I would love a copy of this for my gig on NYE!  Please?

    • illiam Gates says:

  60. Miley_distant_soundz says:

Sick template works amazing I have just tweaked to add two buttons to flick between the clip view of deck a and deck b so I can see the waves when I’m mixing, I know it’s the devils work but I’ve added in stop buttons just for my radio show purposes.

I’m living the new filters on the faders and that alone saves a lot of effort when in the mix

I’m using this with serato bridge but feel this is enough for me to use ableton solely on the road without serato so I will need an external audio interface can anyone recommend a good one that’s been tried and tested in clubland?

  61. cmusicd says:

I can’t get supatrigga VST to work on my mac osx lion operating system.  Is there a something I’m  missing after the download or something?  The AU is installed and working just can’t get the VST to work.. please help

Hey Dylan, Jamal here from household. I never got the redemption code for the APC update. i’m still stuck with the bug. is there anyway you could blast me an update? Thing still cuts out and maxes out my cpu meter every time I use the internal mixer. HELP!!!

  63. gophers123 says:

    Hello,

I recently purchased and downloaded the updated version of
your APC40 template, and I cannot get it to work.  I moved the
APC_GATES_WILL_MARSHALL folder into the MIDI remote scripts folder, set
the controller surface to APC40 Gates Will Marshal, the input and output
both as APC40.  The track and remote settings are correctly set up as
according to the instructions.  However, my Ableton interface does not
change at all (it only has Audio and MIDI columns), and when I try to
put a track on any of the cells, it doesn’t show up on my APC40.  I feel
that there is a critical step to the setup that I have missed, however I
have followed the instructions carefully.  I am using a PC.   Please
    advise, thank you very much!

    • tighe says:

i think you need to open the .als file that comes in the main folder (which is the actual template).  i believe the midi remote scripts setup is just for the lights on the apc40.  i was having the same issue before i realized this.

  64. tighe says:

hi, so i just purchased the template and i was sent version 1.1 to my email.  i am having the issue with clipping.  any way i can get the latest version?  i don’t have a redemption code…

    HELLO!!!!!

  66. Jayreilly79 says:

This template is utterly phenomenal! Can’t get enough!! 100% perfection I went through the instructions and methodology slowly and thoroughly. I gotta say, I’m amazed with the work here.

  67. Phando says:

The template is indeed wonderful. Problem is, I rebuilt my computer and dont have the latest. Can you please send me a new redemption code?

  68. Wskirby says:

I need a new redemption as well. Love the Template, but could never get the lights to work… I have a show tomorrow so please email me asap. Wskirby@crimson:disqus .ua.edu

    Hi,
just purchased the suite version, installed the script but do not see APC 40 ill gates in the drop down menu of the midi sync in the preference. I am using a macbook pro. Template works but no lights.

    • Kyle says:

Make sure you copy the APC_GATES_WILL_MARSHALL stuff. Right-click and Show Contents. Click on App Resources –MIDIRemoteScripts and drag files into there.

  70. Kyle says:

Just a quick question about your APC40 template: Is there any way to get the knobs on the APC40  to automatically detect the position of the virtual knobs in software? Currently every time I turn the APC40 off it loses all knob positions, so when I open the template set all of the positions in software are different from the hardware (which always starts up at 0 value). Basically every time I go to DJ I have to manually set all the gains , filters, the bpm knob, etc to the correct position. I understand this isn’t possible with the faders, but shouldn’t the knobs automatically snap to their position in the live set?

    • Kyle says:

Thought I’d share a workaround for this problem if anyone is interested:
      1. Save the APC40 template with whatever knobs positions you want. (to set the default)
      2. When you boot the template when you go to DJ your hardware knob positions will be wrong, especially if you turned off the APC. (they will all be at 0)
Instead of setting all the positions manually:
      3. Go into Options Midi/Sync and turn Output: APC_GATES_WILL_MARSHALL_OUT Midi Remote ON.  This will set all the infinite knobs to their correct position (doesn’t work for faders obviously)
      4. Doing this, of course breaks the VU meters, so turn Midi Out  Remote OFF again to get them working.
Voila, your knob positions will be correct, without having to manually set them all to default values.

  71. Brokenelectrician says:

I havereally wanted to buy this template, i am however using the apc20.  I prefer it over the apc40  because of it’s size and the midi note mode.  I imagine the template for the 40 would be fairly easy to convert to use on the 20.. I’m just looking for any insight into the task from someone who has actually used this template before.. Is it going to work?  Are controls vital to the templates functionality able to be easily programmed to the format of the 20?

  72. I love this template, it’s a thousand times better than what I was doing myself and makes playing more creative and so much more fun.  I scrolled the questions and comments on here but didn’t see an answer to my problem so I was hoping you could help me out.  When I load a song into the session and look at the track info, the BPM is reading HALF of what it actually is.  Doesn’t cause too much of a problem, just requires some live math here and there.  I’ve tried doubling the speed in the track info but it just plays at twice the speed, of course.  I’m wanting to start doing the live packs but hoping to figure this out first?  I have the latest template on a Macbook Pro with Suite.  Any help would be awesome, thanks!

    • illiam Gates says:

yea, that’s an ableton quirk BUT there is an easy solution!

near the BPM in the clip view there are :2 and /2 buttons which halve or double the clip BPM. click those and you’re SORTED :D :D:D

    • relay says:

I just installed tonight and see the same BPM issue. Same setup, Macbook Pro with Suite.

      • When you say you tried doubling the speed, did you do that in the “Sample” tab underneath there Warp button? It’s called (Seg. bpm) There is a +2 -2 feature that doubles and half’s the time of that particular sample, or in your case, song…….. Hope that helps!

        • That’s what I tried previously.  It seems that the speed of samples/song isn’t actually different when I load them in however for example, I know a particular electro song is at 128, but in the Seg. BPM it shows as 64.5 BPM instead.

          • That’s just Live analyzing the song at 1/2 it’s speed…. Just double it and your ready to go!

i see your comment on doubling the speed for the BPM issue but it doesn’t help any.  It actually speeds it up too much.  I too am interested in using the live packs but being as new as i am at all this i like to use samples and loops to figure things out.  The BPM issue is putting a damper on things to where i am not using the template at all which is a shame cuz it’s SO AWESOME!!!!!  Is there something i am missing?  Do i need to warp the hell out of the loop/sample?  All the samples are labeled by BPM so i know what it’s suppose to be it’s just not setting it at the right tempo or allowing me to make the change.  Also when i load the loops it doesn’t activate as a loop in only goes through one time and then stops.  When i activate the loop function it throws everything out of wack.  What am i doing wrong here?

Where can i get the suppatrigga?

  78. Hey Dylan, I updated to Lion and was wondering if you noticed any issues with suppa trigga and the effects not being in time anymore. i.e. if I’m mixing @ 128 bpm I look at the chain of effects and the bpm says 110 bpm and there is a noticeable fumble when using beat repeat efx and such. Just wondering if the supa trigger may need an update to be compatible with lion. Thoughts?

    Dylan,

I was wondering if there is any way to record the mixes you do inside the smart mixer (as there is no record button under the left and right main tracks)? Any help?

    • Soren says:

Same issue…great template for performance just need good recommendation to record mixes

      • 1. Prepare your tracklist/whatever
        2. Save this set under a unique name, in the same folder as the APC template
        3. Click the global record button at the top of the screen
        4. Use play and stop to begin and end your mix

With this method, I’ve had trouble resuming sets once I stop recording, so I keep a default template and open that for every new mix I want to make.

  82. Anthony says:

Great template i love it but one problem, none of the punch ins work except for the beat reapeat. Do you know what i may be doing wrong?

    Thanks a lot

  83. cody says:

I absolutely love this template.  Got good with it and then added an mpd 26 to the template!  Even more possibilities!

  84. THIS TEMPLATE WORKS WITH 8.3, but you’ll need to copy the MIDI remote scripts to the new install directory and maybe re-install/backup other changes you’ve made to your Ableton installation.

  85. Mauricio says:

Hi Ill Gates.  Got the APC40 template.  So I am having a problem having all of the individual “buttons” light up on the VU meter.  For example, on the VU meter for the “right channel”, one of the buttons does not light up, although VU meter buttons above, below and next to it do light up.  The same thing happens on the main VU meter.  Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

  86. Trace-ace says:

Hey, love the template, it was running fine but today for no apparent reason it seems to have stopped working.  The punch in effects aren’t releasing when I let up my finger, and when I load clip packs none of the clip launch buttons are lighting up or working.  I don’t have a clue what happened, it was working fine yesterday!

  87. Trace-ace says:

Err… figured it out.  I must’ve fiddled with the midi settings last night and my APC got all tangled up in my keyboard.

  88. MorpheuS says:

My “stop” buttons aren’t working. They work in reverse kinda, like if you turn the volume all the way off you can press the button and it comes through. But it doesn’t do anything with the volume up. Any ideas how to fix this?

  89. MorpheuS says:

Ok so after a day with the thing here are my problems: My gate punch-ins don’t work, they work how described below. Also when I go to the right deck it sounds kind of weird, like lowpassy somehow.

  90. MorpheuS says:

Nvm I reinstalled and everything works perfectly now!

  91. Amplifuseaudio says:

I am wondering if anybody else is having any sound problems when loading clips into the sample tracks!? When I have a clip loaded onto the sample track, I only hear low frequencies coming out of the master channel.

It sounds like the sample track has a low pass filter on it all the time. The peculiar thing is that when I have audio routed out 3/4 for my cue mix, I can hear the sample track just fine in my headphone cue without any funny filters or sound problems. Is there something I am missing about the sample track that would be causing the audio to sound this way only on the master 1/2 audio outputs in Live?

  92. jf says:

the template is amazing, and honestly i dont think i would even think about using the apc if i hadnt seen this video. the only problem im having is with the supatrigga.

    1. On my imac, everything works fine. but on the right channel, i can’t get the slow down effect. it works fine on the left side.

    2. on my mbp, i put the supatrigga .comp  file in the same place as my imac, but i keep getting that the ableton cannot see the file.

    thanks, great work

    jf

  93. Mike says:

Hi, thanks for this great template. I was wondering if there is a image of the APC mapped out like the trigger finger and MPD on the instructions readme? Ive been trying to watch the video but everything is not covered in there, especially for the right channel and I cant seem to get audio from there. Also the gain, mids, and lows dont seem to be doing anything. Thanks!

  94. jason says:

When I install the Template, How do i get ableton to have the layout you have in session view?

  95. Chris says:

I bought Will Marshall’s template that absolutely refuses to save and I bought your template which absolutely doesn’t work anything like it does in the video out of the box. I’m extremely frustrated right now.

So when I set up Ableton with the MIDI remote scripts, and open the template, the VU meters work fine, and there are no complaints about missing plugins because I also have SupaTrigga installed. The VU meter is literally the only special sauce that is working. Solo/Activate/Cue work as they always did, the knobs at the top right control pan instead of effects selector, gains, highs, etc.

Why would it work so half-assed? Would it either be “Nothing, no VU meter because you didn’t put the files in the right folder” or “All the remote scripting magic works because the files are where they need to be.” I mean, how much more is there to do besides copying the remote scripts, installing SupaTriga into the VSTs folder and opening the template?

  96. Stargate Jones says:

i have two pc’s i perform on, will i be able to put the template on both of my computers??

  97. Cam says:

I think something is wrong with my remote script the fader that is supposed to control my channel volume for the left sample channel is mapped to control the fx tweak in my left main channel and it is stopping my left beat repeat from turning off when I release the button the tweak macro doesnt move in conjunction with my fader either it is slower and keeps moving after I stop moving the fader how do I fix this or do I need a new copy of the template remote script I am extremely frustrated with this as ableton wont let me remap anything and if I try to map any other commands in ableton it automatically maps them to this screwy fader cc 3/7 if someone from ill. gates team would help me get this taken care of soon it would be great as I have a big gig on saturday!

  98. PotentSync says:

    • Cris says:

Will, did you ever get an answer on this? I installed the template on my desktop, like an idiot, and now it wont install properly on my laptop when I try to copy it over, it outputs midi notes, like a piano with any button I push. I am very confused.

  101. willyp says:

I bought your template, it was all floating along nicely with the midi remote scripts and everything. But, when loading the template it says “supatrigga vst cannot be found”. I have a mac OSX and downloaded the AB version, but still no luck. Help please! i wana bust this thing open already.

  102. Striker says:

I’m using windows 7 & running Ableton 8.2.2 and am about to purchase your APC40 Template but I am not sure that I have all my options/preferences setup right for it. Also it says that SUPA TRIGGA PLUGIN is required for your template to work, but I cant find which directory to place the .dll file on my pc running windows 7. Could you please help me out?

  103. Hey Ill, this template has been an absolute game changer. 2 quick questions for ya:

    1) Can this template handle dual APC functionality? I play as part of a duo and each of us use an APC40. When we launch both of ‘em, the second APC is locked in companion mode and controls the 8 tracks to the right of the ‘R S Out’ track. Obviously no bueno. I’m trying to make tweaks here and there but with your insider knowledge, am I wasting my time or can this work?

    2) The headphone cue works sans effects or EQ’s. Is there any way to cue a true sound? Going to scroll the message board to see if anybody else has posted for this but figured I’d throw it out there.

  108. Hey ill, I just got this template today and put the apc gates will marshall folder in the midi remote scripts but when I go into ableton to select it its not there. Also I could not get to the website to download the supatrigga plug in. Any help would be appreciated

How does it work with changing genre’s and BPM’s during a Set?

  110. Panthro says:

Do you have a knob assigned to control your bpm on your template? and if i add the limited on the master will it mess up or confuse the template?

  111. DeeJayReeDoo says:

Yo Ill, Nice work on the template. DJing with Ableton had never appealed to me until now. Like mant others who have left messages here though, I’m having trouble loading Supatrigga successfully. Please respond to this issue. Also, how would you go about replacing Supatrigga with Effectrix (v 1.3)?

Hey Mr. Gates, I purchased you APC 40 template a few days back. Everything is good and working well except for a small problem I have. I also have your mpd 32 template and ive been using it for months now and gotten quite used to it I did some modification to that template I like it very much. Now I recently got a APC40 tried your template for it but I gotten used to my mpd32 template that tried porting that to Apc40 with the addition of the Will Marshall/ill Gates script for the VU meters… everything works fine now I figured some stuff on my own. But the right deck VU meter doesnt work everything else works fine. Could you point me to right direction on how to fix that problem… I would really appreciate it. Hoping to hear from you. Thanks.

I’m having trouble exporting the audio. I recorded a live set I played recently and wanted to export it so I can share it but when I do so the WAV file doesnt playback, it is the same length as my set but no audio playback whatsoever. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

Loving the template. Was hoping I could incorporate Turnado somehow into the template and somehow bring back the LEFT and RIGHT arrow functionality of the Device Control so I can hit the arrow, jump over to a bank where I have Turnado and mess the knobs and stuff, and then be able to hop back to the default template mapping with the EQ’s and everything. I’m not quite sure where to start with achieving that though. Anyone have any ideas or resources? Thanks!

I downloaded supatrigga, but i can’t get it to work. ableton says it can’t be found.

Having all kinds of weirdness when I try to add other midi tracks to the set. Seems there is a bunch of stuff mapped to receiving on all MIDI channels from all sources. Anyone want to take a crack at helping me figure out what needs to be mapped internally (lights and supatrigga effects) so I can add other sampler tracks to this?

(Also is there any version post 2.0? Seems a bit buggy still. Occasionally locks up and/orthe delay gets stuck on or off)

Hi is there anyway I can disable the crossfader??

I can’t get the template to connect with my APC40!!! Please help. When I go to preferences and put the APC Gates Will Marshal to control surfaces I only have two options for midi ports and they are both to the Apc40. Anyone please! Maybe Ill gates Himself? Its eating away at me!!! I cant wait to play with it!

    • starck says:

this seems right. mine is working exactly like that. Control Surface Will Marshall, in and out is APC40. look for the problem elsewhere.
